  1. Tomoko_figure_Wonfes

This is another figure of Tomoko at Wonder Festival. It is not official and made by a figure artist/customizer. ※Doujin figures/garage kits at Wonder Festival have got 1-day permission by copyright holders.

You can see more pics here.

    • Watamote is pretty popular on 2ch, Futaba (2chan) and NicoNico Douga now. So I’m not surprised by that. At least, I think Watamote is one of the most popular anime of this season.

  2. Masaya Onosaka: “Tonight’s Watamote was very funny. It teached me a lesson! I’ll have a game to let my fans record my voice anything they want at the next live in which there are a few people!”

Yuuichi Nakamura: “Why are you watching Watamote? Please don’t do such a interesting thing without permission!”

Masaya Onosaka: “That fan service is very interesting. I wanna be a sexual object to girls. Perhaps there will be a few people at the live this weekend and I’ll do it.”

I think you know who they are, though. They are VAs and Yuuichi Nakamura is Tomoki’s VA.

This is the actress playing Tomoko in the TV commercials of Watamote. She is a 17 year old high school girl and her name is Arisa Kanzawa.

    Jyu-zai

And Yasunobu Yamauchi, the author of “Daily Lives of high school boys” will start a new manga series named “罪罪罪罪罪罪罪罪罪罪。(じゅうざい) / Jyu-zai”, on Gangan Online from August 29th.

  3. Now we’ve watched the first half of the whole episodes.

Please vote the poll below! This poll is open to both anons on 4chan and Japanese fans.

After watching 6 episodes, what did you think of the Watamote anime so far?

  4. I sometimes wonder whether Tomoko enjoys being alone or feels lonely…
and why her mother doesn’t realize Tomoko’ s feeling…

    • From personal experience, people don’t realise something is wrong, or if they do they just want to stay away from the drama because they don’t know what to do. Having been in Tomoko’s shoes even worse than she is, nobody was willing to look past the fact that I had no ability to be around people and see the real problem – that as a result of abuse and neglect compounded by multiple mental illnesses and quirks I just had no ability to deal with people. Those few that did try to ‘help’ only tried to lay down the law by treating me like a problem, not realizing that in actuality I needed a lot of love and compassion.

Watamote plays it very accurately. She’s constantly reaching out to her brother who just sees her as a pain in the ass. Her only friend thinks she’s just being herself as normal. Her dad is a largely absent businessman. Her mother constantly nags her for not being like her brother. Everyone fails to see how much she needs help and she can’t reach out because of how afraid of people she really is. And if anyone does try to help I have no doubt they’ll pull the “What is wrong with you” angle, which won’t work because it will just put her on the defensive even more so.

Long story short, having a social disorder sucks. And everyone around her is just acting normal.

      • Thank you for your reply. Your reply is helpful for me to understand people like Tomoko.
You describes feelings and situations of peple like Tomoko, having a social disorder or something like that. You also refer to Tomoko’s family, friends or those of people suffering like her (including yourself). Your reply is also based on your own experience, …isn’t it?
        That makesme see the light.

So, … I’m afraid whether it is OK or not that I ‘laugh at’ Tomoko’s behaviors or situations and that I ‘enjoy’ “Watamote.” We ( my husband and I) sometimes…often feel sad, pain to watch it.

Anyway, your reply makes me to understand not only Tomoko’s feelings or situations but also people around her.

        • As someone who went through something similar, Watamote is spot on. A lot of it comes from denial, having no friends is a pretty hard thing to accept. You’re too frightened to do anything and you become so frustrated that in your head you start lashing out at people.

Like how Tomoko doesn’t go to the karaoke because she isn’t friends with anyone, so she tries to deal with it by thinking that the people who are going are being perverted. But really she wants to be included and not have to worry about being a loner.

          • Back in high school, I used to crave a “secret base” to be alone at lunch time just like Tomoko. I liked to be alone but at the same time I wanted to have friends, too. I day dreamed about someone just like me will discover my secret place and we will hang together. At the end of the day, only a dean came to check if I was doing drug lol

  5. Tanigawa Nico: “I translated your question with translation service, so I don’t know whether this is the answer, though. I think she will learn little by little in the days to come.”

    • Cool! Thanks!!

I think it is the Watamote Museum held at Akihabara Gamers from Aug 1st to 12th.

    • The girl is just reading the manga in Japanese. And she says she watched the preview at Akihabara Gamers and she was the only woman alone there.

        • To be honest, I don’t think so. Her pronunciation is clear and good for an amateur, though.

      • This is actually pretty close to what I have imagined of Tomoko’s voice when I read the manga..

The comparison of the ED of Watamote EP05 with the orginal anime “まんが日本昔ばなし (Japanese Folktales)”, by QtQ @ NicoNico Douga

imagine-nation, a program of NHK WORLD (NHK international broadcasting) will feature Watamote. They’ll interview Izumi Kitta and Shin Oonuma in English (voice-overred). Airing Schedule: 6th 24:30, 7th 4:30, 8:30, 12:30, 16:30, 20:30 (JST).

    • Could you translate some of her twitter messages? Gonna watch the episode of Imagin-nation in a few hours – can’t wait.

      • Tanigawa Nico recommended the show to the followers and he/she said he/she could understand about 10% of it and wished that it was subtitled.

    • I was on holiday when the imagine-nation show aired, is there a place you can watch it now?

      • I don’t well know about international shipping. Perhaps the card sleeves can be shipped, I think. But shipping rates at Amazon Japan are very expensive.

Check the page below and try search at other shops.

Watamote Museum is held at Akihabara Gamers from today to Aug/12th. Manga manuspripts, illustrations, picture panels of the anime, and the uniform of Tomoko’s school are on display.

    • That fan book sounds so cool. Maybe someone will translate it into English but I’m not so hopeful.

By the way, I tried to post the links to the CDJapan pages for the comics on the Related Goods page, though it doesn’t seem to have appeared there.

  8. Megami_Sep_Watamote

This is a pic from Megami Magazine September

I think the episode 4 was very lewd and hilarious. Yuu was too sexy for a high school girl.

    Watamote_anime_reaction_ep04_03

And Izumi Kitta’s acting was brilliant as usual. I wonder which chapters the next episode will have.

    • I kind of enjoy the anime more than the manga. It is just so well done.

      Also, her dad is awesome.

    • I’ve got another pic. Tomoko’s Nendoroid confirmed, its price and release date are unknown yet.

      Tomoko_Nendo_02

      P.S.
Watamote special stage was held in the Wonder Festival 2013 summer today.

In the show, Izumi Kitta said that they had already finished all voice recording and the episode 7 would be the “Handshake” chapter.

And Shin Oonuma, the director of the anime said that he knew Watamote was popular on 4chan.

This is the video of the show.

      • >And Shin Oonuma, the director of the anime said that he knew Watamote was popular on 4chan.

        Oh my, oh my!

Have a source for that or were you even there?

        • I added the video of the show above.

More precisely, Oonuma director said that he had known that Watamote was popular on 4chan through the grapevine before he read Watamote manga; when he read it, he felt deep sympathy for Tomoko, then he accepted its anime adaptation offer.

          It’s 5:10 ~ 5:45 in the video.

  9. Apart from the release date of volume 5 was there any interesting information in the Watamote radio shows or was it just promotional material? And are you going to buy any of the BluRays/DVDs? They’re so expensive even without shipping costs!

    • In the radio, they collect lonely episodes from listeners and Izumi Kitta judges them whether they are lonely or not. She sounds a lot like Tomoko, not only her voice but also her personality. But there has not been any important information yet except for the release date of Vol.5.

And I think I will buy Sentai’s BDs with English dub or sub. They are almost always cheaper than Japanese ones and I’m a fan of English dubbed anime. I’m running another website to introduce English translated anime and manga to Japanese people who are learning English.
