  7. Hey, Webmaster, I wanted to ask you a question.

    What do you think of Komi-something-san? Do you like her? And what do you think of the past three or so chapters?

    Myself, I like her a lot. I think the past few chapters have been the most interesting in a long time, and I hope Komi-something-san will be a regularly occurring character. It’d be cool if she and Tomoko eventually became friends, but it’s probably unlikely to happen.

    • I like Komi-chan, too.

      Well, some Japanese fans, not so many people, say that Watamote has changed recently and got boring. They say Tomoko is too selfish now. I think I understand what they feel.

      On the other hand, some fans were saying that they wanted Tomoko to grow up. She is now growing up gradually in some way and she has come to be able to talk with others more naturally than before. Tomoko talking with others is very funny. I think Tomoko and Komi-chan won’t become ordinary friends, though, I want them to become kind of friends in the future.

      … I cannot explain well even in Japanese, let alone in English. But I love Watamote as well as before.

    This is prototype Tomoko from the fanbook.

    Before starting the manga, their editor told them make Tomoko cuter. But they didn’t want to make her too cute. So they discussed and the artist drew cuter Tomoko tentatively to deceive the editor. It was the prototype above. But when she drew the draft of the first chapter, she drew Tomoko less cute on purpose.

    • Yeah, I sometimes think that they should have gone with what she looked like in the first chapter. Less cute & anime-ish and more “realistic”, I guess? Although, early drawings weren’t really consistent with her look.

      • According to wiki, Tomoko was supposed to be a tall, unattractive looking girl with Sanpaku eyes.

      • I agree, her look seems to have become more ‘cartoony’ over time, I think more realistic and less cute is better for the character.

        And while the anime captures the spirit of the manga I think they made her look too cute looking.

    • I’m glad they made her less cute. Even though her prototype form looks really nice, I think the super cute look doesn’t really suit her character.

      Anyway, this is really interesting, thanks for posting it.
